Some research suggests gotu kola's triterpenes have mild anxiolytic and neuroprotective activity, potentially through modulation of the amygdala and antioxidant effects on neural tissue, providing a plausible mechanism for its traditional cognitive and calming uses.

Chronic venous insufficiency. Evidence level: Established. Multiple randomized controlled trials show standardized gotu kola extract (titrated triterpenic fraction) improves symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, including leg swelling, heaviness, and pain, along with objective measures of capillary function, making this the best-supported clinical use of gotu kola.

Wound healing (topical and oral). Evidence level: Established. Gotu kola's stimulation of collagen synthesis is well documented, and both topical and, to a lesser extent, oral gotu kola preparations show benefit for wound healing speed and scar quality in clinical studies, consistent with centuries of traditional topical use.

Anxiety. Evidence level: Promising. A small number of randomized controlled trials suggest gotu kola may modestly reduce anxiety symptoms, with one frequently cited trial showing reduced acoustic startle response (a physiological anxiety marker), though the overall evidence base remains smaller than for more established anxiolytic botanicals.

Cognitive function. Evidence level: Emerging. Some small studies suggest gotu kola may modestly support memory and cognitive function, particularly in older adults or those recovering from stroke, but the research base is smaller and less consistent than for its venous and wound-healing benefits.


Dosage & Timing

Clinical trials on venous insufficiency commonly use 60-180mg daily of a standardized titrated triterpenic fraction, divided into two to three doses, continued for at least 4-8 weeks before assessing benefit. Other studies have used whole-herb extract doses in the range of 500-1,000mg daily. There is no official Recommended Dietary Allowance for gotu kola.


Interactions & Contraindications

Gotu kola may have mild sedative effects and could have additive effects with sedative medications or alcohol. Because gotu kola influences liver metabolism enzymes in some research, and rare case reports have linked high-dose or prolonged use to liver enzyme elevations, individuals with liver disease or those taking medications metabolized heavily by the liver should consult a healthcare provider before use, and periodic breaks from continuous use may be prudent. Gotu kola is not recommended during pregnancy given traditional concerns and insufficient safety data in this population.
