What the Evidence Actually Shows

Correcting a vitamin D deficiency reduces eczema severity. Evidence level: Well-established. Multiple randomized trials and a 2024 meta-analysis of eleven RCTs consistently show reduced severity scores with daily vitamin D3, with effect sizes that exceed the threshold considered clinically meaningful.

Address zinc only with a documented deficiency

Because zinc's benefit seems concentrated in people who are deficient, indiscriminate high-dose supplementation isn't well supported and can backfire (see safety notes below). A blood or dietary assessment is more useful here than guessing.

Support your skin barrier from the outside too

Nutrients work alongside — not instead of — topical care. Regular moisturizing with a fragrance-free emollient, lukewarm (not hot) showers, and avoiding known irritants remain the best-supported interventions for eczema, and they make any nutritional approach more likely to show results.

Track your own food triggers, carefully

True food-triggered eczema flares are less common in adults than often assumed, and they're highly individual. High-dose zinc taken long-term can interfere with copper absorption and cause deficiency-related problems of its own, so it shouldn't be used indefinitely without guidance. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can build up in the body, so very high doses over long periods should be supervised rather than self-directed. Omega-3 supplements can mildly increase bleeding risk at high doses, which matters if you're on blood thinners or scheduled for surgery. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, and parents considering supplements for a child with eczema, should talk to a pediatrician or dermatologist first, since dosing and evidence differ meaningfully in these groups.
